Merle's Door - Book review about real dogs

This book was the best one I've read in a very long time, and maybe the best Dog book I've ever read. I laughed, cried and felt I was living with Merle and Ted.
It's so different in the compelling way it portraits the bond between the author, Ted Kerasote and Merle, his canine friend. It won my heart and mirrored my feelings to the complex and fascinating world of dogs.
It has drawn some controversy because it is not a book about pampering dogs and spoiling them with things dogs have lived happily without for hundreds of years.
It is a well written book about the Real dog and what they can become if given the chance. I'm not saying to turn our dogs out to fend for themselves. I am saying let your dog be a dog, don't treat them like a small child. The needs of children and dogs are so different. I would never treat my son like a dog so I'll never treat my dogs like my son. Just think about it. Wow, maybe I should have made these last few comments a new post.
OK, on to Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog.

While on a river camping trip, Kerasote met a dog who was living in the wild. They became attached to each other, and Kerasote decided to name the dog Merle and bring him home to rural Wyoming. What marked a close and lasting bond between the remarkable Merle and Kersote were the lessons they learned from each other. Kerasote taught Merle how to balance living with humans and in the wild, and Merle influenced Kerasote's beliefs about the intelligence of dogs and their need to experience the world around them.

Acting as Merle's translator, Kerasote allows us to understand the issues that dogs face as they develop relationships with their human companions. Deftly weaving the story of Merle's life and lessons with the latest research on animal consciousness and behavior, Merle's Door shows us how dogs might live if we gave them more freedom, no matter where we live.

I would love to hear what others thought about this book. The book has captured the attention of the book world and was reviewed in USA Today and in People's magazines list of recommended reads.
